story of stuff

The story of stuff did not really open my eyes to new things. It just explained the over view of how our consumption is now a days in America. It is all about the mass consumption of products the government promotes by favoring big corporations. Through looking at the story of stuff it clearly explains the cycle of consumption in American. But leaves little to no information on what the average person can do to help this cause. It did list certain things to do but stated in the video that this would have little effect on the overall cause.
The story of stuff is very similar to Jensen’s article “forgetting shorter showers”. They both take about how individuals efforts will have no impact overall. In the story of stuff the key thing that could have an effect right away on cutting down consumption is to get more strict government policies and officials that will actual do something to better ourselves. They that is a stretch to get down but just like in Jensen’s piece you need to take down the big corporations in order to have an impact on society. In the video they mention little things that a person can do to help like recycling but that would not put a dent in the hole that America has dug them self’s into. The ultimate goal of story of stuff is to get the cycle of consumption to be able to be self contained and not wasteful.
