It was a cold morning to say the least... Well to be honest it wasn't too bad seeing as 10 degrees Fahrenheit feels like a warm spring day in Farmington nowadays. Apart from the weather my favorite tree was the Blue Spruce. Why? Because it was the closest to my dorm room... just kidding! This tree to me caught my eye along the snowy Arboretum Tour because of it's blue-green, with a hint of silver, color that made it unique. The species is a native of the Rocky Mountains and can live for hundreds of years (UMF Arboretum Tour Guide, Pg. 6). This tree stands very tall in size and is abundantly full of needles, which give the tree its color. A fun fact from the Arboretum Tour Guide is that the color of the needles is produced by surface waxes that protect the needles from all elements of weather that nature throws at it (Pg. 6).
If you ever want to take a second look at the Blue Spruce, you'll easily be able to find it on your way to the dining hall. It's located next to the library and in perfect sight when your walking along South Street. The tree is a beautiful sight especially in the winter months when most trees lack color, the Blue Spruce sets itself apart from the competition.
I like how Sam discussed the colors in the tree saying that it was a “blue-green, with a hint of silver, color that made it unique.” It was interesting how he used the fact from the Arboretum tour guide stating that the needles are protected from the wax that is on them. And I did think it was funny how you discussed how cold it was because I think we were all thinking the same thing while we were walking on the tour.
ReplyDeleteI love the Blue Spruce, especially the color. The way the bluish grey needles shine in the sunlight on a cold winter day is very surreal. I also find it amazing to think about the age of a tree. It must see so much - being a part of the history that we can only imagine. I really liked Sam's use of language in this post. It gives a very nice picture of the tree and helps with the flow of the journal write.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, this is the tree that I notice on a daily basis. Wonder why? I think it is probably because of the... well, you know, going to or through the Student Center every day. But yeah, the Blue Spruce is definitely extraordinary. The color and sheer size are amazing. The picture you took of this wonderful tree is really nice. The sunlight glimmering over the snow-covered blue needles are a spectacular sight indeed. All in all Sam, you did a wonderful job of talking of the Blue Spruce.
